'Joy' by Victoria Cantons

‘Joy’ by Victoria Cantons

Art leads the way as Rosie talks to Victoria Cantons, whose paintings are shown at “Loudest Whispers”, the annual Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender exhibition, and Tim Redfern aka Timberlina, who is at the Tate Gallery on 28th January with “Queer confidence – a performance tour of A Bigger Splash”.

This year’s theme at “Loudest Whispers” is ‘Change and Changes’ is perfect for Victoria, who was born intersex with XXY chromosomes. This led to being perceived and raised as male. Only at the age of 39 she was legally recognized as the female she is. Victoria tells us about the experiences she made and the difficulties she was confronted with. Her work explores identity – who I am? who we are as individuals? and finally who we are as a whole?

You can find out more about Victoria on her website www.victoriacantons.com and see her latest art work on Facebook Victoria Cantons Artist as well as listen to her on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Life from 15th September 2012

“Loudest Whispers” is set up by the Camden LGBT Forum and opens on 1st February and runs until 28th March 2013 at the Conference Centre at St Pancras Hospital.

Performance artist Tim Redfern aka Timberlina tells us about “Queer confidence – a performance tour of A Bigger Splash”. It is at the Tate Gallery on 28th January and is based on the “A Bigger Splash” exhibition and focuses on the queer subtexts of self-confidence and ‘collecting pieces’ of one’s identity from the outside world.

For rights reasons the music is not on the podcast, but that’s what you could hear on the show:

1) Marcus Reeves: ‘Black Tears’ from the album “Quicksilver – The Masquerade Macabre”

2) Erin McKeown: ‘Proof’ from the album “Manifestra”

3) Sarah McDougall: ‘Cold Night’ from the album “The Greatest Ones Alive”
